Kathmandu: Nepali Congress (NC) President and former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba has emphasized the need for careful implementation of federalism to ensure it serves the people effectively. Speaking at a program organized by the Nepali Congress Federal Affairs Coordination Department at the party headquarters in Sanepa, Deuba highlighted the importance of empowering local levels and provinces while maintaining accountability across all levels. He urged for serious consideration of the country’s economic situation to avoid disturbing national unity.
According to National News Agency Nepal, President Deuba commended various NC departments for their efforts in revitalizing the party. He acknowledged the dynamic work of these departments in energizing party leaders and cadres, which has contributed to the party’s vibrancy. Deuba also pointed out the challenges posed by constitutional provisions that make it difficult for any political party to secure a majority, emphasizing the necessity of forming alliances while striving for a majority vote.
NC Vice-President Dhanaraj Gurung discussed the limitations of strengthening federalism through taxation, advocating instead for increasing production to fortify the state. He stressed the importance of capital formation and suggested restructuring federalism by reducing the number of lawmakers and boosting production.
NC Joint General-Secretary Mahalaxmi Upadhyay ‘Dina’ called for in-depth discussions on aspects of federalism implementation that have not been successfully executed, highlighting the need to identify and retain positive elements.
Other leaders, including Bhishma Raj Angdambe, Gopal Man Shrestha, Bimalendra Nidhi, Arjun Narasingh KC, and Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat, also shared their views during the occasion.
