Kailali: A team of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) made a field visit to the Kailali Prison on Saturday to enquire about the clash between inmates in prison. A three-member team under the Chief of the NHRC Sudurpaschim Province Office, Prakash Dutta Bhatta, visited the prison.
According to National News Agency Nepal, Bhatta shared, “We are taking stock of the situation. We will submit a report to the NHRC Central Office about the reason behind the incident after our study.” Bhatta also mentioned that the local administration was advised to improve prison management to prevent further escalation of the situation.
Deputy Superintendent of Police of Kailali, Raj Kumar Singh, reported that the police have the situation under control and that measures have been taken to manage it effectively. He noted that sufficient police force was deployed within the jail premises to maintain order.
In response to the incident, the District Administration Office, Kailali, established a probe committee led by Assistant Chief District Officer, Kiran Joshi. The committee has been given a 10-day term to investigate the incident.
The clash, which occurred between inmates in Block ‘A’ and Block ‘B’ of the prison, resulted in the death of Bharat Chaudhary from Dhangadhi Sub-Metropolitan City-4. Chaudhary succumbed to his injuries on Saturday while receiving treatment. Additionally, 44 prisoners were injured during the altercation. Despite its capacity to house only 100 inmates, Kailali Prison is currently accommodating 680 prisoners.
