Kathmandu: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed the Government of Nepal to make prison management and administrative activities within the prison transparent, provide humane treatment to inmates, and make all prisons in the country human rights-friendly.
According to National News Agency Nepal, the human rights watchdog body has issued the directive to effectively implement the recommendations given after carrying out on-site monitoring of the prisons. The NHRC has emphasized the need to arrange adequate human resources and enhance the capacity of all prisons, including those in Rupandehi and Kailali.
Issuing a press release on Tuesday, NHRC spokesperson Dr. Tikaram Pokharel stated that the prison improvement is envisaged to make the process of transferring inmates transparent, develop a strategy to prevent the recurrence of clashes within prisons, ensure efficient security arrangements, and transform prisons into correctional centers.
The NHRC’s Sudurpaschim province office has been consistently monitoring the situation following recent violent in-fighting in Kailali jail.
