Ordinance Assured Passage in House, Says Communications Minister

Pokhara: Minister for Communications and Information Technology Prithvi Subba Gurung has affirmed that the ordinance presented by the government in the House will be passed. In his address at the 32nd anniversary celebration of the Himalaya Eye Hospital, Minister Gurung emphasized the importance of the ordinance for promoting good governance and enhancing the effectiveness of public services.

According to National News Agency Nepal, Minister Gurung stated that the ordinances have been introduced in line with constitutional provisions, highlighting the necessity for reforms in Nepal’s existing laws and regulations. He clarified that the ordinance was introduced before the parliamentary session began, circumventing the need for parliamentary discussion during the session.

Minister Gurung further explained that the Social Media Bill has been introduced to curb activities undermining national unity, law and order, and to protect the nation and its people. He assured that the government does not intend to restrict freedom of expression or press freedom, and mentioned that the bill’s penalty provisions are open for discussion and potential amendment.

Additionally, Minister Gurung committed to supporting the Himalaya Eye Hospital in its endeavors. Various attendees, including former chair of the hospital Dr. Dil Bahadur Chhetri, Gandaki Provincial Assembly member Bhim Karki, and others, urged the Gandaki Provincial government to ensure the hospital’s stability by taking ownership.
