Kathmandu: Former Prime Ministers and leaders of various political parties have extended best wishes to all Nepalis on the occasion of Constitution Day. In a message, CPN (Maoist Centre) Chairperson and former Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ emphasized the necessity for strong unity among all republican, democratic, and change-loving forces.
According to National News Agency Nepal, Dahal stated that advanced democracy is the only alternative to democracy, highlighting the shared responsibility of all Nepalis to protect the nation’s independence through safeguarding the constitution and democracy. He further mentioned the need for expanding and revising the constitution’s continuity, urging party members and the public to prioritize nationwide reconstruction.
Dahal also called for the formation of an independent, impartial, high-level probe commission to investigate incidents that occurred on September 8 and 9, and to bring the guilty to justice. He expressed his belief that the Gen-Z protest was not against democracy but against the status quo and ad hoc governance, advocating for advanced democracy.
Similarly, Nepali Congress President and former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba remarked that the constitution is a significant achievement of the revolutionary struggles and democratic movements led by the Nepali people. In his message, Deuba noted that the constitution, promulgated through the Constituent Assembly on Asoj 3, 2072 BS, guarantees rights by adopting universal values of democracy, human rights, and social justice. He paid tribute to the martyrs of democratic movements in the country.
Likewise, CPN (Unified Socialist) Chair and former Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal emphasized the importance of addressing the weaknesses in the constitution’s implementation. He advocated for socio-economic transformation by combating corruption, ensuring good governance, and creating employment opportunities. Nepal highlighted the characteristics of the constitution, such as competitive multi-party governance, fundamental rights, and press freedom, while acknowledging that the journey toward prosperity has not met expectations. He also paid tribute to those who sacrificed their lives for democracy and republicanism, as well as participants in the recent Gen-Z protest.
