Kathmandu: General Secretary of the Nepali Congress, Gagan Kumar Thapa, has announced that preparations are being made concurrently for the party’s 15th general convention and the election to the House of Representatives (HoR).
According to National News Agency Nepal, General Secretary Thapa, speaking at a press meet organized by the Nepal Press Union Sarlahi chapter, expressed concerns about whether there would be adequate time to conduct the election, given that the party’s convention is scheduled for next month. He indicated that efforts are being intensified to manage both processes simultaneously.
Thapa acknowledged that considerable time was spent debating whether the general convention should precede the election. With the decision to hold the general convention before the HoR election now firm, he emphasized the need for focus and commitment to the upcoming events.
He further explained that the party is committed to the March 5 election to avoid further constitutional issues. He stressed the importance of dispelling any doubts about the election to expedite preparations. Thapa also mentioned that the government had been informed of potential threats from escaped inmates and weapons looted during the September protest, urging the government to address criminal activities.
General Secretary Thapa also referred to an all-party meeting held by Prime Minister Sushila Karki, where it was emphasized that all groups and political parties should have the opportunity to participate in the election. Thapa shared his plans to launch a campaign for the position of party president, with new policies and messages, and confirmed his intention to contest the election from Kathmandu Valley again.
