Kathmandu: Vice President Ramsahay Prasad Yadav has stressed the need for research and increased awareness to combat sleep disorders. Addressing the second international conference of the Nepalese Society of Sleep Disorders, he emphasized that the rising prevalence of sleep disorders, driven by busy lifestyles, unhealthy diets, and increased technology use, requires timely intervention.
According to National News Agency Nepal, the Vice President urged individuals to recognize mental tension, unemployment, economic vulnerabilities, and diseases like diabetes and hypertension as contributors to sleep disorders. He highlighted that modern lifestyles, urbanization, and excessive use of mobile phones and social media are exacerbating the issue, negatively impacting human health.
Vice President Yadav advocated for awareness programs on the importance of sleep, starting from schools to communities, and called on stakeholders to address sleep-related problems as a shared responsibility. He emphasized the necessity of increasing the number of specialist doctors and health workers, prioritizing the identification and treatment of sleep disorders in health policies, promoting research based in Nepal, and strengthening international cooperation.
“Sleep-related disorders can directly affect not only individuals but also social and economic development. By prioritizing a regular and healthy lifestyle, meditation, yoga, physical exercise, and consulting with specialist doctors, their effects can be mitigated,” he stated. He expressed confidence that the conference, with active participation from national and international experts, researchers, doctors, and policymakers, would bring new ideas, research opportunities, and possibilities for collaboration.
