President Urges Journalists to Play Role in Building ‘New Bangladesh’

Dhaka: President Mohammed Shahabuddin today called upon journalists to play an effective role in building a discrimination-free and democratic ‘new Bangladesh’, being imbued with the spirit of the 1971 Liberation War and the July-August mass-uprising. The Head of State also urged the journalists to perform their duties with utmost professionalism for the betterment of the country and its people.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the President made the call as the newly elected executive committee (EC) of Dhaka Reporters’ Unity (DRU) paid a courtesy call on him at the Bangabhaban this afternoon. Noting that the mass-media is the fourth pillar of the state as well as the mirror of the society, President Shahabuddin said, “You (journalists) have nothing to be advised . . . You are sensible enough. Perform your duties with utmost professionalism.”

The President emphasized the effective role of mass-media in preventing the spread of rumours, misinformation, disinformation, and distorted information, and making the people aware of such activities. Highlighting the contribution of journalists to the country’s democratic movements, including the Great Liberation War, he stated that journalists play a critical role in establishing justice and equality in society and upholding human dignity.

He further urged the DRU leaders to ensure transparency and accountability in the administration of the state through objective criticisms and by pointing out the mistakes of the government. Newly elected DRU President Abu Saleh Akon and General Secretary Mainul Hasan Sohail led the 21-member DRU delegation.

During the meeting, the delegation highlighted the overall activities of DRU, seeking cooperation in executing various programs undertaken for the welfare of journalists. Military Secretary to the President, Major General Mohammad Adil Chowdhury, and Press Secretary Md. Sarwar Alam, among others, were present on the occasion.
