Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli Embarks on Strategic Visit to Beijing.


Kathmandu: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has embarked on a four-day official visit to Beijing, responding to an invitation from his Chinese counterpart, Li Qiang. This visit underscores the longstanding and cordial relationship between Nepal and China that dates back several centuries, characterized by an exchange of civilizations, knowledge, and philosophy.

According to National News Agency Nepal, modern diplomatic ties between the two nations were formally established in 1955, with China opening its embassy in Kathmandu in 1960, followed by Nepal establishing its embassy in Beijing in 1961. High-level exchanges have been a constant feature of this bilateral relationship in recent years. China has been a consistent partner in Nepal’s development, heavily investing in sectors like trade, education, tourism, and infrastructure, and providing economic support through various grants.

Nepal stands to benefit significantly from its relationship with China, one of the world’s leading economies. China’s commitment
to peace diplomacy aligns with its interest in Nepal’s political stability and prosperity. Expectations are high for China’s continued support in sectors such as IT and transport connectivity, areas in which China has already been a significant contributor to Nepal’s development.

China’s investments in Nepal have included major infrastructure projects such as the Kathmandu-Bhaktapur Trolley Bus, the Araniko Highway, and Kathmandu’s Ring Road Project. Additionally, China has supported Nepal’s agricultural, tourism, industrial, and energy sectors, further reinforcing its role as a reliable partner, especially during times of crisis.

Former Nepali ambassador to China, Mahendra Bahadur Pandey, emphasized the strong, cordial, and reliable nature of Nepal-China relations. He noted that Nepal has consistently adhered to the ‘One China’ policy, maintaining a problem-free relationship despite external pressures. Pandey highlighted China’s support for Nepal’s political stability and development goals.

CPN (Maoist Ce
ntre) leader Surendra Karki reiterated the importance of redefining Nepal’s relations with its neighbors, India and China, both of which have emerged as global economic powerhouses. Karki emphasized the potential for Nepal to become a transit hub through China’s Belt and Road Initiative, while stressing the need for Nepal to focus on its national interests in its dealings with China.

The conversation with leaders Pandey and Karki highlights the strategic significance of Prime Minister Oli’s visit to China, as Nepal seeks to strengthen its ties with a nation that sees it as an old friend and a strategically important partner.
