Kathmandu: Nepali Congress (NC) leader and former Minister for Women, Children and Senior Citizens, Surendra Raj Acharya, has stated that some amendments are needed to the constitution and certain issues should be resolved following the adoption of federalism in the country.
According to National News Agency Nepal, Acharya, a House of Representatives Member and NC Lumbini Province Committee General Secretary, emphasized that all political parties should collaborate on amending the constitution, as the NC cannot achieve this alone. He noted that the constitution, acts, and rules must be aligned with public expectations, and that several jobs have been affected due to the absence of necessary laws at the provincial level. Disputes over the rights of federal, provincial, and local governments have arisen due to these legislative gaps, impacting development efforts.
Acharya highlighted challenges in the operation and transfer of civil servants and the management of police administration. He stressed that relevant constitutional changes should be made, and laws should be drafted to ensure comprehensive reforms.
Acharya also underscored that the current government’s priority is constitutional amendment, urging the entire parliament to unite in this effort. He pointed out that corruption has affected all levels of government and called for the maintenance of good governance to end corruption and ensure efficient service delivery.
He acknowledged public frustration stemming from political activities and commented on recent protests and actions by the former king. Acharya emphasized that public calm can be maintained if the country is governed according to public aspirations and good governance is prioritized over party interests.
Furthermore, Acharya expressed concern over the rising trend of youth out-migration for employment, particularly to Gulf countries. He suggested creating job opportunities within the country to address this issue, advocating for reforms in education and the establishment of industries. Additionally, he indicated that the tourism industry could generate significant employment opportunities.
