Dhangadhi: Situation is returning to normalcy gradually in the Kailali Prison, thanks to the efforts from the government agencies, security bodies, and other stakeholders. A large number of police personnel have been deployed on Sunday to maintain law and order to normalize the situation arising from a clash between inmates in Kailali Prison in Dhangadhi, the District Administration Office, Kailali, shared.
According to National News Agency Nepal, Member Secretary of a probe committee and Administrative Officer of the District Administration Office, Shivaraj Joshi, stated that the situation is gradually normalizing and necessary security provisions have been ensured. The District Administration Office on Saturday formed a probe committee under the leadership of the Assistant Chief District Officer, Kiran Joshi, with a term of 10 days for the investigation.
On Sunday, officials and police teams assessed the situation of inmates and confirmed the total number of inmates with assistance from the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) officials. A team from the NHRC had visited the Kailali Prison on Saturday to investigate the incident. Officials, including the Chief of the NHRC Sudurpaschim Province Office, Prakash Dutta Bhatta, visited the prison.
The NHRC Province Office is expected to submit a report to its Central Office regarding the cause of the incident. During the visit, Bhatta emphasized that the local administration should focus on better management of the prison.
Bhatta noted complaints regarding the transfer of inmates without notifying their families, overcrowding in the jail, the need for machines to examine technical appliances, and the demand for sufficient human resources as concerns within the prison.
An inmate, Bharat Chaudhary from Dhangadhi Sub-Metropolitan City-4, died on Saturday during treatment following a clash between prisoners in the jail on Friday night. It is reported that 44 prisoners were injured in the incident. The clash broke out between inmates residing in Block ‘A’ and Block ‘B’ of the jail. Currently, the Kailali Prison houses 680 inmates despite having a capacity for just 100.
So far, the family and relatives of the deceased have refused to accept the body of Chaudhary, demanding that those responsible be brought to justice after a fair investigation of the incident.
