Kathmandu: President of the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI), Chandra Prasad Dhakal, has emphasized the need for a special government initiative to uplift the morale of the private sector. Speaking at the ‘National Macroeconomic Debate 2.0’ organized by the FNCCI, Dhakal highlighted the vital role of the private sector, which contributes 81 percent to the country’s economy. He urged the government to acknowledge this contribution by passing a proposal of public importance from the Council of Ministers to raise public awareness about the sector’s significance.
According to National News Agency Nepal, Dhakal pointed out that while the government is working to reduce corruption and establish good governance, in line with the Gen-Z movement and the demands of the younger generation, the private sector is striving to recover from the damages caused during recent unrest. A preliminary survey by the Federation revealed that physical damage amounted to Rs 48 billion, with the private sector incurring losses of approximately Rs 88 billion.
Dhakal stressed the importance of taking the strictest possible action against those responsible for arson, vandalism, and looting during the movement to prevent the proliferation of impunity. He insisted that the perpetrators should not be given any encouragement.
He also mentioned the establishment of the Nepal Development Public Limited (NDP) Company, initiated by the FNCCI with the involvement of members from the Confederation of Nepalese Industries, Nepal Chamber of Commerce, and the Non-Resident Nepali Association. The NDP aims to dispel the negative belief that significant developments cannot occur in Nepal or with Nepalese investment. Dhakal stated that the company plans to invest in large infrastructure projects by pooling internal capital from across the country, thereby boosting investor confidence and demonstrating the feasibility of undertaking large projects through domestic capital mobilization.
