Technology and Behavioural Change Key to Ending Gender-Based Violence: PM Karki

Kathmandu: Prime Minister Sushila Karki has emphasized the crucial role of technology and social behavioural change in eradicating gender-based violence.

According to National News Agency Nepal, during the inauguration of this year’s 16-day activism against gender-based violence, which commenced with the national slogan ‘Use technology correctly: end gender-based violence,’ Prime Minister Karki highlighted the ineffectiveness of violence in any form. She noted that the current slogan is pertinent as technology can play a significant role in spreading awareness, enhancing access to information, and strengthening the reporting mechanisms.

Prime Minister Karki also pointed out that while no religion, culture, or tradition endorses violence against women, and legal frameworks provide equal rights, practical implementation remains a challenge. She underscored the importance of increasing women’s representation in decision-making roles and urged political parties to prioritize female candidates to enhance women’s participation in elections.

Furthermore, the Prime Minister remarked on the psychological and multifaceted harm violence inflicts on women’s lives, making the protection, relief, and rehabilitation of survivors a state priority. She expressed that the 16-day campaign should lead to visible changes annually, as the legal foundations are adequate but require effective implementation, calling for collective involvement in the cause.

In her closing remarks, Prime Minister Karki urged all stakeholders to combat gender-based violence through the responsible use of technology, stringent law enforcement, and fostering positive behavioural changes.
