Kathmandu: TikTok has announced the removal of 6,078 videos from its platform in Nepal over the past two months for violating community guidelines. The videos were taken down as part of the social media company’s efforts to uphold digital safety and maintain a secure online environment.
According to National News Agency Nepal, TikTok representatives revealed that a significant portion of the videos, specifically 99.1 percent, were removed immediately after being flagged in April and June, while 93.2 percent were deleted within 24 hours of being reported. This data was disclosed at the ‘Digital Safety Summit Nepal,’ an event organized by TikTok in collaboration with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology in Kathmandu.
Sidra Jalil, a representative from TikTok, presented a working paper at the summit detailing the regulatory guidelines developed by the company. Jalil emphasized the importance of age-specific content allocation to create a respectful and well-structured TikTok platform. The
guidelines stipulate that users must be at least 16 years old to send direct messages and 18 years old to host live sessions.
The summit also highlighted a lack of awareness among users regarding proper social media usage, which has led to non-compliance with the guidelines. Fordous Mottakin, TikTok’s Head of Public Policy and Government Relations for South Asia, reiterated the company’s commitment to collaborating with the Government of Nepal to enhance digital literacy and online safety. Mottakin stressed that the guidelines are specifically designed to protect children and young users, expressing a particular concern for their safety on the platform.
