Two Arrested Following Attack on Hill Tracts Students in Dhaka

Dhaka: A court here today sent two people arrested over an attack on a peaceful gathering of a group of students of hill tracts in front of NCTB, Motijheel on Wednesday. Dhaka Additional Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ziadur Rahman passed the order as police produced Arif Al Khabir and Md Abbas before the court and pleaded to keep them behind the bars.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, police arrested Arif and Abbas last night (Wednesday). In the morning on Wednesday, a student organization named Students for Sovereignty besieged the NCTB building to press their five-point demand, including punishment for those involved with the incorporation of the word ‘indigenous’ and a map of undivided India in textbooks.

On the other hand, another group, under the banner of Aggrieved Students and People of the Hill Tracts, went to the NCTB premises to hold a programme for restoring the ‘indigenous’ graffiti in textbooks. A scuffle broke out between the two sides when the students of hill tracts approached the NCTB premises.

The police went to the spot and took position between the two sides. Around 1:00 pm, some people carried out an attack on the students and the people of hill tracts, leaving eight to nine of them injured.
