UN Assistant Secretary-General Kirstine Damkjaer Set for Official Visit to Bangladesh

Dhaka: United Nations (UN) Assistant Secretary-General and UN Office for Project Services (UNOPS) Deputy Executive Director Kirstine Damkjaer will be arriving in Bangladesh for an official visit from February 11 to 12. The visit is aimed at reviewing the cooperation between the government of Bangladesh and UNOPS, with a focus on climate change, disasters, and development cooperation, as stated in a UN press release today.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Damkjaer is scheduled to hold meetings with advisers and high-ranking government officials. These discussions will concentrate on sectors where UNOPS is already collaborating with Bangladesh, including healthcare, climate change, and sustainable infrastructure.

During her visit, Damkjaer will also inspect the National Institute of Diseases of the Chest and Hospital (NIDCH), which is one of the 29 hospitals benefiting from the PSA oxygen plant project. This initiative is being executed by UNOPS with funding from the Global Fund and stands as one of the most significant healthcare support projects currently underway in Bangladesh.

In addition to healthcare, UNOPS is actively supporting environmental sustainability efforts in the region. A key project in this domain is the “Plastic Free Rivers and Seas for South Asia” initiative, which is being implemented by the South Asia Cooperative Environment Programme (SACEP) with financial backing from the World Bank.
