US Backs Interim Government Efforts to Chart Democratic Path: New Envoy


Dhaka: New Charge d’affaires (CDA) in the US embassy, Ambassador Tracey Ann Jacobson, today reiterated Washington’s support for the interim government’s efforts to chart a prosperous and democratic path for the Bangladeshi people. She reassured the US support during her first meetings with Adviser for Foreign Affairs Md. Touhid Hossain and Foreign Secretary Md. Jashim Uddin at the foreign ministry.



According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Ambassador Jacobson highlighted the strong partnership between the United States and Bangladesh, emphasizing support for the interim government’s efforts toward prosperity and democracy. This was communicated through an official Facebook post by the US embassy following the meetings.



The meetings also addressed shared interests and priorities between the two nations. These discussions took place a day before the inauguration ceremony of the US President-elect in Washington D.C. Meanwhile, a media statement from Bangladesh’s foreign ministry confirmed that both the foreign adviser and the CDA committed to deepening bilateral relations in areas such as trade, investment, human rights, labor reforms, and the repatriation of forcibly displaced Rohingyas.



The foreign adviser updated the CDA on the progress of ongoing reform activities and reiterated the interim government’s commitment to organizing free, fair, and credible elections, as expressed by the Hon’ble Chief Adviser. He expressed gratitude for the US Government’s appreciation and support of these reform actions.



Ambassador Jacobson reaffirmed the ongoing support from the US government for Bangladesh’s democratic transition and appreciated the interim government’s efforts in building consensus among political parties. She expressed optimism regarding Bangladesh’s macroeconomic stability and the sound economic footing resulting from current economic and financial reforms.



The foreign adviser assured Ambassador Jacobson of full support during her tenure in Bangladesh, expressing hope that bilateral relations would reach new heights during this period.
