Dhaka: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today said the countrymen love sports and cricket as well. The secretary general made these remarks before distributing prizes to the champion and runners-up teams of the ‘Zia Smriti Cricket Tournament’ organized by BNP Dhaka (north) unit at Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Mirza Fakhrul highlighted that the tournament was named after Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman due to the people’s affection for the valiant freedom fighter, Ziaur Rahman, Bir Uttam. He noted that Ziaur Rahman, a soldier who declared the independence of Bangladesh, initiated efforts for new reforms to build a modern and prosperous nation in a short span of time.
Mirza Fakhrul further emphasized that Ziaur Rahman was the pioneer in introducing multiparty democracy through his reforms. He expressed his gratitude to the organizers for arranging the cricket tournament, which reflects the country’s love for sports.
