Dhaka: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has called upon the countrymen to work together to safeguard the country’s independence, sovereignty, democracy, and the basic and human rights of the people.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Tarique Rahman made this appeal in a Facebook post today, on the eve of Mass Uprising Day, commemorated tomorrow. He emphasized the historical significance of January 24, 1969, describing it as a landmark in the nation’s history that initiated the journey toward independence.
Tarique paid tribute to those who sacrificed their lives during the mass movement of 1969 and other democratic struggles, offering prayers for the eternal peace of their departed souls. He recalled the unity of students and citizens on January 24, 1969, which resisted the colonial misrule of the Pakistani regime at the time. This unity led to a mass movement that culminated in the fall of a military dictator.
Rahman highlighted that the mass uprising of 1969 was pivotal in paving the way for Bangladesh’s independence. He stated that its core objectives included transitioning from autocracy to democracy, establishing multiparty political practices, fostering freedom of thought and expression, and restoring civil liberties.
In his message, Tarique Rahman urged the people to remain united in the ongoing struggle for democracy and human rights, drawing inspiration from the spirit of the mass uprising.
