Kathmandu: Minister for Women, Children and Senior Citizens, Nawal Kishor Sah Sudi, has announced that the government is prepared to implement the recommendations made by the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Violence against Women (CEDAW) Committee.
According to National News Agency Nepal, during a media interaction organized by the Forum for Women, Law and Development (FWLD), the Minister stated that the Ministry is directly involved in implementing the Convention’s recommendations and understands its responsibilities in this regard. The interaction focused on the conclusions and recommendations from the recent CEDAW 90th Session.
The Committee’s report highlights both the progress and challenges Nepal has encountered in advancing gender equality. The Ministry’s primary concern is the effective implementation of legal and policy provisions to address these issues. Minister Sudi emphasized the government’s readiness to collaborate with civil society to tackle these challenges.
Minister Sudi further reiterated the government’s commitment to eradicating all forms of violence against women by fully enforcing national and international commitments. The strengthening of legal and policy frameworks is underway to support this goal. He identified CEDAW as a crucial instrument for promoting women’s rights and human rights.
Kamala Parajuli, Chair of the National Women Commission, urged a focus on enforcing the provisions for women, as well as indigenous and ethnic communities, as outlined in the CEDAW. Additionally, Durga Sob, Vice Chair of the Nepal Samajbadi Party (Naya Shakti), and Gita Aryal, Chair of FWLD, called for the effective implementation of CEDAW to empower women.
