Local Levels Integral to Federal Republic, Says Former President Bhandari

Biratnagar: Former President Bidya Devi Bhandari emphasized the crucial role that local levels play in the federal democratic republic during the inauguration of the National Conference of the deputies of local levels in Biratnagar. She highlighted the power and accountability of local governments within the federal system.

According to National News Agency Nepal, Bhandari underscored the significant impact of women in leadership roles at the local levels, noting that their involvement has enhanced inclusion, accountability, and democratic practices. She pointed out that the constitution grants local governments substantial responsibilities, including local infrastructure development, school management, basic healthcare, environmental conservation, agriculture promotion, social security, health services, and sanitation.

Bhandari further elaborated that the democratic republic has evolved into a way of life rather than merely a governance structure. She stressed the importance of making citizens happy and the nation prosperous by accelerating development efforts rooted in the republic’s foundation.

The former President also addressed concerns about good governance, urging local-level representatives to focus on addressing these issues. She praised the constitutional provisions that ensure and promote women’s representation and leadership in development initiatives.

Additionally, Bhandari called for political stability and a swift progression of the development process in the country. The two-day conference, organized by the Biratnagar Metropolitan City, gathered vice-chairs from 291 local levels to discuss these pressing issues.
