Biratnagar: A Digital Training Hub Project, a joint initiative of the Nepal Netrajyoti Sangh (NNJS) and Orbis International India, has been launched at the Biratnagar Eye Hospital. The project aims to enhance ophthalmic training in Nepal through the use of digital tools, wet lab upgrades, and the Cybersight platform, marking it as the first of its kind in the country.
According to National News Agency Nepal, the major objective of the project is to develop skilled human resources in eye healthcare by providing world-class training for clinical, paramedic, management, and administrative staff. The initiative is particularly designed to support individuals who are unable to attend international training due to constraints such as time, finances, language barriers, or other reasons. Graduates of the training are expected to significantly contribute to eliminating preventable blindness in Nepal through medical intervention.
A bilateral memorandum of understanding was recently signed in Biratnagar by NNJS Secretary General Bharat Bahadur Chand and Orbis International India’s Director of Programme, Dr. Rhishi Raj Borah. The collaboration between the two organizations aims to establish Nepal as a digital training hub for eye care treatment.
Chand stated that under the project, world-standard training will be conducted for target groups, with future plans to offer training in various languages as needed. As suggested by Orbis International on its website, the goal of the project is to increase the capacity of eye health professionals and health systems to treat and prevent blindness and visual impairment.
During the signing ceremony, Dr. Borah remarked on Nepal’s exemplary progress in eye health and treatment, stating, “This project will be implemented here in collaboration with Nepal Netra Jyoti Sangh.” Training participants can attend sessions physically or via a blended learning approach from their workstations. The training, supported by advanced technologies, will cover areas such as cataract, anterior segment, vitreoretina, glaucoma, optometry science, eye health program management, and wet lab management.
