Authorities Impose Nighttime Vehicle Ban on BP Highway Due to Monsoon Risks

Kavrepalanchowk: Vehicular movement on the BP Highway will be closed from 12:30 am to 5:00 am for the next 15 days to mitigate travel risks associated with the monsoon season. This decision was made during an inter-district coordination committee meeting involving district officials from Kavrepalanchowk, Sindhuli, and Ramechhap.

According to National News Agency Nepal, the restriction will take effect starting 12:30 am on Saturday. Kavre Chief District Officer Umesh Dhakal stated that reducing the operational hours for vehicles is intended to minimize travel risks during the monsoon period. Vehicles traveling from the Kathmandu route will be halted at Kavrebhanjyang of Kavrepalanchowk, while those heading to Kathmandu will be stopped at Khurkot during the restricted hours.

An eight-kilometer section of the BP Highway, stretching from Chaukidanda of Kavrepalanchok to Barkhekhola of Sindhuli, was severely affected by unseasonal rains in late September last year, necessitating temporary restoration. The highway serves as the shortest route connecting the federal capital to eastern Nepal, with thousands of vehicles using it daily.

As reported by the Road Division, Bhaktapur, the combination of floods and landslides caused substantial damage to multiple sections of the 160-kilometer highway. The most affected areas include the stretch from Khurkot to Nepal Thok (34 km) and from Nepal Thok to Dhulikhel (50 km), amounting to a total of 84 kilometers.
