Home Minister’s Diktat to Book Vehicles Running Despite Disaster Alertness

Kathmandu: Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak has issued a stern warning to both drivers and officials who violate early warnings regarding disasters and their impacts. He emphasized that even Chief District Officers, Police Chiefs, and traffic police officers responsible for allowing transportation despite disaster warnings would face consequences.

According to National News Agency Nepal, Home Minister Lekhak made these remarks during a ministry meeting focused on disaster preparedness and response within the road sector, particularly in light of the monsoon season. He highlighted the importance of strict adherence to transport and driving codes, as well as decisions aimed at reducing road accidents.

The Home Minister also called on all relevant parties to ensure that disaster information is disseminated to all citizens, with particular attention to those who may be directly impacted. He reiterated that any official, including CDOs, Police Chiefs, and traffic police, found permitting vehicular movements after restrictions due to heavy rainfall and potential disasters, would be held accountable. However, he noted that ambulances and emergency services could be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Additionally, he instructed the ministry’s Secretary and the Inspector General of Nepal Police to issue appropriate circulars to enforce these directives.

According to him, security personnel and local representatives are often the first points of contact for the public during road disruptions. Therefore, it is crucial to provide accurate information promptly and to respond swiftly to such situations, Lekhak emphasized.
