Home Minister Announces Establishment of Dedicated Department Against Drug Abuse

Kathmandu: The government is set to establish a dedicated department for drug control. This information was shared here today at a programme held on the occasion of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, which is observed on June 26 each year. It has been said the department will be established in the upcoming fiscal year.

According to National News Agency Nepal, Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak announced the government’s plan to set up the department dedicated to drug control during the programme. He mentioned that the Ministry has already been implementing awareness programmes and prevention efforts along with provisions of punishment against drug abuse.

The Minister highlighted that drug abuse leads to unwanted consequences, including road accidents, suicides, cybercrimes, and other incidents. He emphasized the importance of prevention and public awareness to tackle the issue effectively.

“Our society has been affected by drug abuse in a devastating way and awareness programmes against drug abuse must reach communities, homes, neighbourhoods, and schools,” the Minister asserted. He called for collective efforts, stating that government initiatives alone are insufficient to achieve the desired goals.

Presenting data, the Minister disclosed that the current number of drug users across the country is approximately 134,000, indicating the severe impact of drug abuse on society. He noted that drug abusers, suppliers, and those involved in its storage constitute the second highest portion among prisoners nationwide, underscoring the seriousness of the issue.

The event was attended by Home Secretary Gokarnamani Duwadi, Inspector General of Police Deepak Thapa, Chief of the National Investigation Department Hutaraj Thapa, and representatives from various concerned bodies, as well as government and non-government organizations.
