PM Pledges Development of Karnali Corridor as Key Trade Route with China and India

Humla: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has announced plans to develop the Karnali corridor into a major trade route connecting Nepal with its neighboring countries, China and India. The initiative is set to enhance trade opportunities and foster regional connectivity.

According to National News Agency Nepal, Prime Minister Oli emphasized the strategic importance of the Karnali corridor not only for the residents of Karnali and Humla but also as a significant trade link with the neighboring nations. He revealed plans to upgrade the existing road to a two-lane blacktop road to facilitate smoother transit.

In a recent event, the Prime Minister inaugurated a bailey-bridge over the Chuwakhola river in Kharpunath Rural Municipality, Humla district. This newly constructed bridge marks a significant milestone, connecting the Humla district headquarters to the Karnali corridor for the first time in 26 years since the inception of the road network.

During the inauguration, PM Oli expressed his satisfaction with the new connection of Humla’s district headquarters, Simkot, to the national road network. He assured the public of his commitment to national prosperity by pledging the completion of a motorable bridge in the area.

Despite the challenges, the Prime Minister stated that the road development would proceed using various measures to overcome any obstacles. Additionally, he proposed the establishment of a quarantine point at Hilsa, the border point between Nepal and China, to tap into the trade potential and facilitate business activities with neighboring countries.

The bailey-bridge, completed by the Nepali Army in three months, now serves as a crucial link in the region. PM Oli, who traveled to Kharpunath from Kathmandu via a Nepali Army helicopter, was warmly received by the local community.

The event was attended by several high-profile officials, including Defence Minister Manbir Rai, Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport Devendra Dahal, Chief of Karnali Province Yagyaraj Joshi, Chief Minister of Karnali Province Yamlal Kandel, Chief of Army Staff Ashokraj Sigdel, and other dignitaries.
