Kathmandu: The Muslim community is celebrating the Muharram festival today, marking the commemoration of the demise of Hazrat Imam Hussain, the grandson of Hazrat Mohammad, the founder of Islam.
According to National News Agency Nepal, the festival is traditionally observed with the setting up of tazias, which are replicas of the tomb of Hussain, in front of homes. Mohammad Harun Halwai, the central president of the Nepal Muslim Ittehad Organization, explained that placing tazias is a customary practice during this festival, which takes place in the first month of the Islamic calendar.
The tazias are crafted using materials such as bamboo and paper. Once the festival concludes, these tazias are collectively immersed in nearby lakes or ponds by the Muslim community, symbolizing the completion of the Muharram observance.
