Adoption of Ultramodern Technology for Disaster Response in the Offing-Home Minister

Kathmandu: Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak has announced that the government is prepared to adopt ultramodern technology for disaster response, search, rescue, and relief operations. The announcement was made during a ceremony for the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) and the Nepal Drone Association. The event took place at the Ministry of Home Affairs, highlighting the country’s readiness to utilize drones for disaster-related activities, including the delivery of essential supplies like drugs and water. The minister emphasized the importance of collaboration with private sector entities to enhance disaster response efforts.

According to National News Agency Nepal, the MoU outlines various collaborative tasks between NDRRMA and the Nepal Drone Association. These include search and rescue operations, relief distribution, transportation of goods, observation of disaster-hit areas, physical mapping, loss and damage assessment, and information collection and analysis. The agreement specifies that the Drone Association will provide necessary equipment and operators free of charge, based on the needs of NDRRMA.

Furthermore, the NFRRMA is responsible for arranging transport and accommodation for the deployed members. It will also coordinate and facilitate the mobilization of drones and their licensed operators. A coordination committee has been established to provide guidance, coordination, and facilitation for drone operations, with the NDRRMA’s Response Section Chief serving as the committee’s coordinator.

The MoU is valid for one year and may be renewed upon mutual agreement. Previously, the Ministry had signed an MoU with the Helicopter Society of Nepal for the free use of helicopters in post-disaster rescue operations.
