Chief Justice Raut Advocates for Urgent Water Resource Conservation and Protection

Kathmandu: Chief Justice Prakashman Singh Raut has emphasized that the paramount agenda of the current era is the conservation, protection, and effective utilization of water resources. Speaking at a program organized by the Nepal Water Conservation Foundation, Chief Justice Raut highlighted the severe crisis posed by drinking water shortages and climate change-induced imbalances, suggesting these could become one of the gravest challenges facing humanity.

According to National News Agency Nepal, Chief Justice Raut expressed deep concern over the visible impacts of climate change on the Himalayan region, noting the transformation of the once white Himalayas into black mountains. He stressed that the adverse effects of climate change are significantly affecting water sources, making the conservation and protection of water not only necessary but inevitable. He further described water as a crucial natural resource and a lifeline essential for the survival of human civilization and the natural world.

Chief Justice Raut cautioned that neglecting the proper management of water resources could lead to a bleak future. He called for serious attention to the implementation of constitutionally guaranteed rights to natural resources, asserting that water is fundamental to national prosperity and sustainable development.

Dr. Ngmindra Dahal, Chairman of the Foundation, also addressed the gathering, pointing out that water sources across the country are endangered due to factors such as unequal distribution, pollution, and unplanned urbanization. He underscored the urgency of addressing these issues to safeguard the nation’s water resources.

The event also saw the presentation of the ‘National Resource Protector Award’ to writer and former water resources secretary Bhubanesh Kumar Pradhan. This prestigious accolade was established to honor individuals who have made significant contributions to the preservation of Nepal’s vital natural resources, as stated by the Foundation.
