Foreign Returnee Chooses Goat and Sheep Herding Over Urban Life

Malkawang: Him Bahadur Chhantyal, a native of Malkawang in Dhawalagiri rural municipality-5, has made the remarkable decision to leave behind the urban comforts he experienced during his 20-year stint in foreign employment. Instead, he has chosen a life dedicated to goat and sheep herding, a path he embarked upon on his own initiative.

According to National News Agency Nepal, Chhantyal’s income from his job in the UAE was enough to provide his family with a comfortable life in Pokhara. However, driven by a desire to contribute meaningfully to his birthplace, he returned to his village and established the Malkawang Goat-Sheep Farm. While his family and relatives remain in Pokhara, Chhantyal now tends to around 600 goats and sheep, relocating them seasonally between the valley and the highlands.

Chhantyal’s commitment to rural life is evident as he moves his herd to the lower valley during the winter, setting up temporary sheds near the Khalikhola Stream. He intends to return to the highlands, specifically Buki Patan near Dhawalagiri Peak, in July-August. Chhantyal finds rural life more fulfilling and healthier compared to the urban environment riddled with noise and pollution.

In his farming venture, Chhantyal employs three locals and annually sells approximately 300 goats and sheep. He invested around Rs 10 million in the business, with annual revenues ranging from Rs 3 to 4 million. The Dhawalagiri Rural Municipality has supported him by constructing animal shelters near the Khali Stream, and the Veterinary Hospital and Livestock Service Expert Centre provides free vaccinations for his livestock.

Despite his success, Chhantyal faces challenges such as shrinking pastureland, wildlife attacks, and the impacts of climate change. To protect his mobile sheds, he employs five dogs and uses two horses for transporting goods, ensuring the safety and efficiency of his operations.
