Kathmandu: An eight-point agreement has been reached between the family of the late Ganesh Nepali, the Government, and the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC). Nepali tragically died last Friday due to self-immolation in front of the Department of Passports after an altercation with KMC police over a traffic violation penalty.
According to National News Agency Nepal, the agreement was finalized after 14 hours of negotiations at the District Administration Office in Kathmandu, concluding at 5:00 pm. The discussions involved Kathmandu Chief District Officer Ishwor Raj Poudel and KMC Chief Administrative Officer Saroj Guragain. The victim’s family has now agreed to proceed with the autopsy and cremation processes.
The agreement includes the formation of an independent investigation committee, led by a former judge, to conduct a fair inquiry into the incident, with a report due within seven days of its formation. Additionally, the Government will explore declaring Ganesh Nepali a martyr, considering the law, past practices, and the investigation committee’s recommendations.
The District Administration Office, Kathmandu will request the suspension of Metropolitan Police Force personnel involved in the incident, with further actions to follow based on the investigation commission’s report. Employment opportunities for Nepali’s wife, Ekamaya Nepali, will be secured according to her qualifications, while KMC will ensure educational arrangements for Nepali’s daughter.
Furthermore, KMC has pledged to provide financial relief to the deceased’s family and manage the last rites and cremation arrangements in Kathmandu. The victim’s family will handle the postmortem and assist in the legal processes, with KMC covering transportation and accommodation expenses for family members during their stay in Kathmandu for the cremation.
