Kathmandu: Flash floods and landslides across the Himalayan border region of Nepal and China’s autonomous region of Tibet have resulted in a catastrophic loss of life and left thousands missing. At least 682 people have been confirmed dead, and nearly 3,000 individuals, including several hundred tourists, remain unaccounted for after the disaster struck on Wednesday. The death toll is expected to rise as search and rescue operations continue.
According to France24.com, the situation remains dire, with Nepal’s disaster agency reporting an increase in the number of missing persons on its side of the border to 2,426 as of Saturday. Meanwhile, in Tibet, 554 people are reported missing, with seven confirmed dead as per China’s Xinhua news agency. This brings the total number of missing individuals to at least 2,980.
Nepal’s disaster agency highlighted the precarious situation of foreign nationals, stating that 517 foreigners remain missing, a group that could include tourists and foreign workers. On the other hand, Chinese officials reported on Friday that 260 foreigners are missing. In addition, the Nepal Tourism Board provided figures indicating that 149 Nepali tourists are missing, although the disaster agency lists a slightly lower figure of 127.
The situation is further complicated by the lack of clarity regarding the number of Nepali residents unaccounted for in the affected areas, although it is believed to be in the hundreds. China’s foreign ministry has reported that nearly 100 Chinese nationals are among the missing in Nepal, with the Nepal Tourism Board confirming that eight Chinese are unaccounted for, while 16 have been rescued.
The disaster has also affected numerous Indian pilgrims, with 98 reported missing, although 85 have been rescued, according to the Nepal Tourism Board. Meanwhile, the United States State Department confirmed that 90 US citizens are missing, with three rescued and no reported fatalities. The Nepal Tourism Board lists 65 Americans as missing, with two rescued.
In addition to these, the Nepal Tourism Board has reported varying numbers of missing persons from other countries, including 61 Ukrainians, 41 Australians, 33 from the United Kingdom, 29 Latvians, 25 Canadians, and several others from countries across the globe.
The disaster has prompted an international response, with various countries working to confirm the status of their nationals and assist in rescue operations. However, the chaotic aftermath and ongoing challenges in accessing remote areas have made it difficult to ascertain the full scope of the tragedy. The lack of detailed breakdowns of nationalities among the missing, especially on the Chinese side of the border, further complicates efforts to provide assistance and updates to concerned families and governments worldwide.
As the search for survivors continues, the international community remains on high alert, working collaboratively to address the immediate needs of those affected and to prevent further loss of life in one of the region’s most devastating natural disasters.
