Nepal Achieves Milestone with Adaptation Fund Project Approvals

Kathmandu:Minister for Agriculture, Forest and Environment, Geeta Chaudhary, has announced that Nepal’s projects approved by the Adaptation Fund mark a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to mitigate climate-induced disasters and enhance adaptation capacity.

According to National News Agency RSS, the 47th Board of the Adaptation Fund endorsed three projects proposed by the Nepal government. These projects aim to strengthen the nation’s capacity for better adaptation to climate change. Minister Chaudhary highlighted the importance of this approval, especially given the increasing demand for financial resources for adaptation and the budget constraints at the Adaptation Fund.

One of the approved projects, ‘Green Koshi,’ focuses on conserving the ecosystem in the Koshi region through nature-based solutions, which will also help build resilience. The National Nature Conservation Trust (NNCT), chaired by Minister Chaudhary, is the implementing agency, with financial assistance of 9.9 million US dollars earmarked for this initiative.

The second project, ‘Strengthening Adaptation and Flood and Landslide Early Warning for the Hindukush Himalaya,’ will be implemented by ICIMOD. It received a proposed budget of 30 million US dollars to aid in its execution. The third project, aimed at fostering local-level leadership and nature-based solutions as climate actions in Lumbini Province, intends to build resilient communities. This project will be implemented by UN Habitat with a proposed funding of 4.9 million US dollars.
