Kathmandu: The Dalit youths have staged semi-nude demonstrations demanding the implementation of constitutionally guaranteed rights for their self-esteem and empowerment, including proportional inclusive representation.
The youths who have been protesting at Maitighar Mandala for the past 39 days drew the attention of the government to their demands again by staging the semi-nude demonstration today.
Semi-nude protestors and other participating agitators chanted various slogans from Maitighar to Baneshwor. The protesters said, “Has democracy come for the Dalits? Did the Republic come for the Dalits? Did the Constitution come for the Dalits?” They raised slogans like ‘What about Dalits if the system has changed”.
Coordinator of ‘Dalit Campaign for Dalits Nepal’, Khagendra Sunar complained that although they have been protesting for 39 days, they have not yet received any hearing from the concerned authorities. That’s why we had to protest semi-nude today,” he said.
The protesters have been demanding that p
roportional inclusive representation should be ensured on the basis of the ethnic population at all levels of the State including the council of ministers, policy-making levels, bodies and appointments as per the provisions of the constitution, and rights.
