KATHMANDU: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, who also serves as the Chancellor of Tribhuvan University, has directed university officials to prioritize meritocracy in the administration of the institution. During a Senate meeting at Nepal’s oldest university, Oli emphasized the importance of appointing Deans and Campus Chiefs based on merit to ensure efficient and fair governance.
According to National News Agency Nepal, the Prime Minister addressed concerns raised by a Senate member regarding delays in the appointments of recommended candidates for key university positions. He instructed that these appointments be completed by December 22, underscoring the necessity of a merit-based administrative system at Tribhuvan University.
Oli clarified that the Vice Chancellor should lead the university’s operations, highlighting the need for a fair and rule-based administration. He dismissed allegations of his interference in university affairs, stating his commitment to supporting meritocratic principles rather than p
ersonal involvement. The Chancellor also called for Senate meetings to focus on constructive discussions rather than criticisms, urging office bearers to prepare effective agendas to ensure productive outcomes.
Participants in the Senate expressed dissatisfaction over the lack of preparation by the university’s office bearers in setting a comprehensive agenda for the meeting. In response, PM Oli pledged to address legitimate concerns and uphold a rule-based approach to resolving issues faced by the university.
