Freedom to Celebrate Culture Highlighted at Tamu Lhosar Festival


KATHMANDU: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Urban Development Prakashman Singh emphasized the freedom of indigenous communities to celebrate their cultures and traditions in a democratic society. Speaking at the Tamu Lhosar Festival in Tundikhel, Kathmandu, Singh highlighted the importance of preserving ethnic identities in a multilingual and multi-ethnic nation.



According to National News Agency Nepal, Singh stated that democracy has allowed indigenous communities to openly celebrate and protect their cultural heritage. He stressed the need to pass down languages, costumes, and traditions to future generations while ensuring the protection of rights gained through immense sacrifices. Singh praised the Tamu community for its active role in promoting its culture and identity.



The Gurung community, with a population of 545,791 according to the latest national census, is renowned for its connection to nature, safeguarding water, forests, and herbs, and its presence in Gandaki province. Former ministers Dev Prasad Gurung, Sita Gurung, and Parbat Gurung also commended the community’s cultural richness and called for government support in preserving these heritages.



During the festival, notable Gurung personalities were honored for their contributions across various sectors. Karna Bahadur Gurung, President of the Tamu Hyula Choja Dhin Gurung National Council, appealed for government attention towards preserving Gurung festivals, languages, and cultures.



The festival featured over 100 stalls showcasing the Gurung community’s customs, cuisines, and cultural performances, celebrating their vibrant heritage.
