Kathmandu: The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has initiated a silver volunteer programme to harness the knowledge, skill, and capacity of experienced citizens aged over 45. This initiative aims to provide these citizens with an opportunity to contribute to society and the nation’s development, even after retirement, as explained by Bibek Bastola, a member of the secretariat of the Urban Planning Commission under KMC.
According to National News Agency Nepal, the programme invites citizens with extensive experience in various fields to join hands in the development of the metropolitan area. Bibek Bastola emphasized the value of mature citizens in contributing to society, stating, “Are you over 45 years old? Have you retired from a job or business? If you wish to contribute to society rather than just rest after retirement, come and join hands in the development of the metropolitan.”
The silver volunteer programme opens avenues for involvement with KMC in sectors such as education, health, sanitation, environment, administration, urban development, and heritage conservation. Interested participants can apply through the ‘KMC Silver Volunteer Procedure,’ which offers an online application link.
Eligible applicants include Nepali citizens, non-resident Nepalis, and foreign nationals aged between 45 and 74, with at least 20 years of work experience in any governmental, private, or non-governmental sector. Additionally, applicants must be willing to provide a minimum of five hours of service weekly for one year, demonstrate honesty and effectiveness in their roles, have no criminal convictions, and meet other qualifications set by the committee.
