Media Should Offer Investigative Contents, Stakeholders Say

Kathmandu: Stakeholders have said that the state-owned media should offer investigative and analytical news contents. At a capacity building programme for the journalists organized by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology and Rastriya Samaachar Samiti (RSS) today, RSS Executive Chairman Dharmendra Jha emphasized the importance of effective investigative news reporting and the transfer of knowledge from senior journalists to the new generation.

According to National News Agency Nepal, senior journalist Rajendra Dahal highlighted the need for state-owned media to shift their focus towards investigative contents rather than current affairs. Dahal pointed out that the role of RSS would be increasingly crucial in facilitating this transition.

Journalist Bishwamani Pokharel noted that many online portals utilize RSS news content and stressed the importance of prioritizing capacity building programmes for state-owned media to enhance the quality of their content. Similarly, RSS General Manager Siddharaj Rai emphasized the need for public media outlets to transition from incident-based news to content-oriented news dissemination.

Mamata Bastola, Under-Secretary at the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, vowed to continue such capacity enhancement programmes in the future, citing the success of the Ministry’s inaugural one-day training session. Participants, including Bhauch Prasad Yadav of Gorkhapatra Daily and Sarita Khanal of Radio Nepal, acknowledged the training’s effectiveness in honing their journalistic skills and recognized the necessity for public media to adopt investigative journalism.

The capacity building programme was attended by journalists from RSS, Gorkhapatra Daily, Radio Nepal, and Nepal Television.
