Sundarbazar: Migration from the Sundarbazar Municipality in the district has been on the rise recently. According to local administration data, a total of 198 people from 72 families obtained migration certificates in the first nine months of the current fiscal year (July 16, 2024, to April 12, 2025). This marks a significant increase compared to the previous fiscal year, when only 93 people from 28 families migrated.
According to National News Agency Nepal, immigration into the municipality has also increased in the current fiscal year (2081-82 BS/2025-26), with 120 people from 39 families relocating here. Last year, only 27 people from 13 families moved into the area. Sundarbazar Municipality, which comprises 11 wards, is experiencing rapid urbanization in some areas, while others remain rural and remote. The recent trend of rural-urban migration is particularly noticeable, although migration to major towns from Sundarbazar remains relatively low.
In the current fiscal year, the highest number of migrants (41 people from 14 families) originated from Sundarbazar-3, while the lowest number (six people from two families) migrated from Ward No. 5. Factors such as education opportunities, health services, employment, and investment are driving the increase in migration.
To address the outflow, local authorities should focus on creating job opportunities, establishing technical schools, and fostering an investment-friendly atmosphere to retain residents and discourage further migration, advised Officiating Chief Administrative Officer Bibek Kumar Pandit.
