Kathmandu: Nepali Congress (NC) leader Dr Shekhar Koirala declared that the Nepali Congress is prepared to participate in the upcoming March 5 election, contingent upon assurances of peace and security.
According to National News Agency Nepal, Dr Koirala expressed the readiness of the country’s oldest democratic party for the forthcoming House of Representatives election during a program organized to commemorate the 102nd birth anniversary of NC leader Krishna Prasad Bhattarai, known as Kisunji in the political sphere.
Dr Koirala highlighted concerns over the current security situation, noting that over 5,000 prisoners are at large and more than 500 police weapons have been looted. He emphasized that elections should not be won through fraudulent means, referencing the Gen-Z revolt on September 8 and 9, which led to prison breaks and attacks on police stations.
He stressed the importance of boosting police morale and attributed the instability to weak nationalism. Dr Koirala emphasized political stability as a priority and aligned his core agendas of good governance and anti-corruption with the aspirations of the Gen-Z generation.
Acknowledging the country’s challenging circumstances, Dr Koirala urged for timely elections to set the nation on a path of development and prosperity. He suggested that delays in the NC’s national congress may occur due to late decisions by the party’s central working committee, affecting the distribution of active membership forms.
Dr Koirala also called for more research on NC’s founding leaders, pledging his support for such endeavors. Constitution expert Prof Dr Bipin Adhikari and spiritual leader Swami Ananda Arun also spoke at the event, commemorating Kisunji’s legacy as a principled and visionary leader.
Santa Neta Krishna Prasad Bhattarai Kendra Chairperson Lokesh Dhakal expressed concerns about the recognition of Kisunji’s contributions, suggesting a change in NC’s leadership and policies for the upcoming election. A book titled ‘Kisunji Preranadayi Prasanga,’ co-authored by Rabindra Uprety and Deva Upadhyay, was also unveiled at the event.
