Ljubljana:The Development, Economic Affairs, and Good Governance Committee under Nepal’s National Assembly has directed the government to start preparations for strategic negotiations at COP-31 to safeguard the nation’s interests.
According to National News Agency Nepal, committee chair Krishna Prasad Paudel emphasized the importance of careful negotiations on international platforms, noting the impact of climate change on Nepal’s diverse geography. He stated that the committee has prioritized discussions on climate change impacts from the outset and is actively engaging with relevant partners to prepare necessary documents for effective negotiations.
Paudel highlighted that a study is being conducted by the committee’s secretary and staff to analyze the situation. He pointed out past shortcomings in negotiation skills and stressed the importance of the bureaucracy in organizing the process and addressing technical aspects, alongside political leadership commitment.
He called on all parties involved to prioritize Nepal’s interests during COP-31 preparations and negotiations, emphasizing the need for fact-based discussions supported by analytical documents with statistics. Paudel assured continuous dialogue with stakeholders to solidify Nepal’s position for the conference.
During the meeting, committee members and ministry officials discussed key issues that Nepal should address at COP-31, such as climate justice, finance, loss and damage, adaptation, and climate-related disasters.
