Tulsipur: General Secretary of the Nepali Congress, Gagan Thapa, has announced that the Nepali Congress (NC) will hold its general convention before the next general election. He emphasized this during his address at the first convention of the Nepal Tharu Association held in Tulsipur on Sunday. Thapa asserted that the party is committed to conducting the general convention in a timely manner as stipulated by its statute.
According to National News Agency Nepal, General Secretary Thapa highlighted that the constitution, law, and party statute require the party to organize the general convention before the 2084 general election. He firmly stated that any suggestion to hold the convention after 2084 BS would be contrary to the law and party statute. Thapa also mentioned that the party plans to contest the next election independently, without forming electoral alliances with any other political parties. He stressed the importance of amending the party statute to empower district chapters to finalize election candidates in their respective constituencies.
Thapa further remarked that a party’s strength lies in its cadres rather than its leaders. He emphasized the need for local districts, such as Dang, to have the authority to select their electoral candidates instead of relying on decisions made in Kathmandu.
On a separate issue, Thapa expressed his view that the constitutional monarchy cannot be reinstated and that the current republican system should be effectively implemented to meet the aspirations of the people. He suggested that any election-related issues could be addressed through constitutional amendments.
Additionally, Thapa pointed out that disenchantment among the youth could be mitigated through activities that serve the public interest. He called on those in power to amend their behaviors to foster an environment that is conducive to engaging the youth.
