Tashkent: Speaker of the House of Representatives (HoR) Devraj Ghimire has highlighted Nepal’s achievements in social justice, inclusiveness, and peaceful transformation, describing them as exemplary on the global stage. In his address to the 150th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, Speaker Ghimire noted that Nepal has successfully transitioned to a federal democratic republic, moving away from a unitary form of governance by resolving its political conflict through a unique peace deal.
According to National News Agency Nepal, Speaker Ghimire emphasized that Nepal’s constitution fully guarantees social justice, equality, and inclusion. He added that gender and ethnic inclusion is ensured through constitutional provisions, spanning from top policy-making levels to crucial state positions, as shared by the Speaker’s Secretariat.
Furthermore, Speaker Ghimire identified the parliament as a critical indicator of social transformation. He also noted that international cooperation could be strengthened, allowing major challenges such as poverty, conflict, and climate change to be addressed through parliamentary democracy.
During the assembly, Speaker Ghimire highlighted climate change as the most pressing challenge currently facing Nepal. He mentioned that natural disasters have affected the lives of hundreds of thousands of citizens. He also recalled Nepal’s efforts in expanding international cooperation for climate justice, promoting green energy, and implementing climate resilience policies.
Additionally, the Speaker informed the IPU about the upcoming Sagarmatha Sambaad event, scheduled to be held in Nepal from May 16 to 18. He expressed hope that the event would raise awareness of the impacts of climate change in mountainous regions.
