Kathmandu: The Police Headquarters has asked the escaped prisoners and detainees to return to jail. Nepal Police’s Spokesperson, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Binod Ghimire, informed that the prisoners and detainees who fled in the wake of the GenZ protest were urged to come in contact with the jail. They could also get in contact with police units, Ghimire added.
According to National News Agency Nepal, the protests across the country on September 8 resulted in vandalism and arson in various offices and units of the Nepal Police as well as prison offices, leading to numerous prisoners escaping from the jails. Now, they are requested to contact the relevant district police office, units, or other local security agencies as soon as possible, as per a press statement issued by the Police Headquarters.
The police reported that more than 14,000 prisoners and detainees combined have escaped the jails, taking advantage of the abnormal situation. Among them, only a few hundred have returned, while some have been arrested from different districts.
