Kathmandu: The Bagmati province government has initiated preparations to call the Bagmati Province Assembly meeting in the third week of Poush, which falls between 30 December 2025 and 5 January 2026. This move comes as pressure mounts from opposition parties for the assembly to convene.
According to National News Agency Nepal, the Chief Minister of the Bagmati government, Indra Kumar Baniya, announced that preparations are underway to hold the Province Assembly meeting by 5 January 2026. The usual assembly hall is currently unusable due to arson and vandalism during recent Gen Z protests. As a temporary measure, the meeting is planned to take place in the hall of the Office of the Chief Minister and Council of Ministers.
Chief Minister Baniya also mentioned that discussions are being held by the Deputy Speaker and Presidents of thematic committees as part of the meeting preparations. Opposition parties in the Bagmati Province Assembly have been advocating for the immediate summoning of the winter session.
The position of Speaker remains vacant after Speaker Bhuwan Kumar Pathak resigned on September 17 following the Gen Z uprising. The assembly has not convened in four months due to claims for the Speaker position by both ruling parties, Nepali Congress and CPN (UML). On the recommendation of the province government, Province Chief Deepak Prasad Devkota prorogued the province assembly session on November 18.
