Kathmandu: Nepali Congress President and former Prime Minister, Sher Bahadur Deuba, has asserted that Nepal is experiencing significant adverse impacts of climate change. Receiving a memorandum advocating for the discontinuation of coal energy usage, Deuba highlighted Nepal’s struggle with climate change repercussions despite its minimal contribution to global carbon emissions.
According to National News Agency Nepal, Deuba emphasized the disproportionate burden Nepal faces and called for global initiatives to compensate affected countries. He pointed out that rising global temperatures are accelerating the melting of Nepal’s icebergs, leading to unpredictable weather patterns that severely affect the lives and livelihoods of its citizens.
Deuba also recalled his commitment to achieving net zero emissions by 2045 BS, a pledge he made on behalf of Nepal during the COP-2026 conference held in Glasgow, United Kingdom. He underscored the importance of gradually increasing the use of electric energy in Nepal to mitigate climate change impacts.
