Nepal Faces Disproportionate Climate Change Effects Despite Minimal Contribution: Leader Koirala

Kathmandu: Nepali Congress (NC) leader Dr. Shekhar Koirala has highlighted the severe impact of climate change on Nepal, despite the country’s negligible contribution to the global phenomenon. Dr. Koirala made these remarks during his visit to the Rastriya Samachar Samiti (RSS)’s central office for a photo exhibition themed “Mountain Tourism: Our Pride, Our Identity,” held in conjunction with the 18th Republic Day celebrations.

According to National News Agency Nepal, Dr. Koirala emphasized the need for the international community to take seriously the issues raised by Nepal regarding the adverse effects of climate change on its mountains and glaciers. “We have been raising the voice about the effects of climate change in nature and human life. Nepal’s mountainous life has been in trouble due to climate change, and the Himalayan series are facing the crisis due to its impacts. The international community should understand this aspect,” he stated. He also recalled his presentation on the topic to a parliamentary committee in the UK during a previous visit.

The photo exhibition, organized to mark the 18th Republic Day, features 96 photographs showcasing Nepal’s mountain ranges, mountain life, and touristic destinations, providing a visual testament to the country’s geographical diversity. Dr. Koirala remarked that these images serve as a powerful tool for promoting tourism in Nepal and stressed the importance of amplifying efforts to protect the mountains and boost tourism.

RSS Executive Chair Dharmendra Jha welcomed Dr. Koirala to the exhibition, which began on May 25. The event underscores the significance of raising awareness about the challenges posed by climate change and the necessity of international cooperation to address these issues effectively.
