Travel Embargo Imposed on Anisul’s Confidante Taufiqa

Dhaka: A court here today imposed a travel ban on Taufiqa Karim, allegedly a confidante and cashier of former law minister Anisul Huq. Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Zakir Hossain Galib passed the order, allowing a plea of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). Deputy director Md Jahangir Alam of ACC filed the plea with the court.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the anti-graft body in its plea stated they have already formed a team to probe allegations of graft and irregularities against former law minister Anisul Huq and his associate Taufiqa Karim. It allegedly found evidence of corruption and exchange of money in appointments, transfers, and postings at different offices under the law ministry in the past.

Taufiqa is accused of purchasing a house in the Basundhara Residential Area at a cost of Taka 6.33 crore, which was allegedly earned illegally. She reportedly has more than Taka 23 crore in various accounts at United Commercial Bank and Citizen’s Bank Limited. Additionally, Taufiqa is alleged to have invested Taka five crore in Citizen’s Bank. The ACC argued that a travel ban is necessary for a proper investigation.
