Kathmandu: The Ministry of Forests and Environment has announced the launch of the 20-year Sagarmatha Tree Plantation Mega Campaign, prompted by the ‘Sagarmatha Sambaad’ programme.
According to National News Agency Nepal, a ministerial decision was made on Monday to initiate the campaign following the Sagarmatha Sambaad held in Kathmandu from May 16-18, 2025. The campaign will involve planting saplings on suitable land annually from Asar 14 to Saun 15, starting in 2025 and continuing until 2045, ensuring the protection of the planted saplings. The Sagarmatha Sambaad emphasized the urgency to save the mountains due to the melting snow, which poses significant risks to lower coastal areas.
Forests and Environment Minister Ain Bahadur Shahi Thakuri stated that the campaign is a crucial step in preserving the Himalayas. The campaign will officially begin on Asar 14, coinciding with National Tree Plantation Day. The initiative will see the plantation of various fruit-bearing and local tree saplings across the nation.
Nepal has pledged to achieve net zero emissions by 2045, and this campaign is expected to support this target. Different organizations have been invited to participate from their respective locations to ensure the campaign’s effectiveness and success.
The Ministry has called upon stakeholders, including federal ministries, provincial governments, local governments, community forest user committees, private sector partnerships, civil society, and the media sector, to engage in the campaign. The campaign’s name, ‘Sagarmatha Tree Plantation,’ reflects its inception following the ‘Sagarmatha Sambaad’.
