Dhaka: Police have arrested two former leaders of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) in separate raids in the Paltan and New Market areas of the city. These arrests are linked to several cases associated with the July-August mass uprising.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the arrested individuals are Moshiur Rahman, aged 33, a former Vice-President of the BCL Central Committee, and Md. Allama Iqbal, aged 35, a former Vice-President of Dhaka College Chhatra League. Moshiur was apprehended by a team from New Market Police Station at 5:30 pm on Wednesday in front of Alpana Plaza. Meanwhile, Iqbal was detained by Paltan Police Station officers at 10:30 pm on Tuesday from Eastern Plus Shopping Complex.
Moshiur faces charges in a case filed with Shahbagh Police related to an attack on the motorcade of former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia. He is also implicated in multiple cases with New Market and Chawkbazar Police concerning the July-August anti-discrimination student movement attacks. After his arrest, Moshiur was presented before Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Monirul Islam and subsequently sent to jail for a vandalism and arson attack case registered with New Market Police.
Iqbal is also an accused in a case filed with New Market Police on November 25, 2024. This case pertains to the attack on the anti-discrimination student movement in the New Market area during the July-August period.
